The Aviva Premiership champions have been organising the Elite Insurance Schools Sevens for Under-13 teams for the past three years, which has expanded dramatically in that time to over 80 teams and six regional tournaments.
But this year sees a new age group added to the mix, with 13 Under-18 teams heading to Franklin’s Gardens from across the East of England on Wednesday, April 22nd, to compete in their own Sevens tournament.
Saints Community coach Phil Powell, who has also been leading the club’s work at Kettering-based Tresham College, says that he is looking forward to this being the first tournament of many.
“The Elite Insurance Schools Sevens has become one of the highlights of the calendar, and by expanding it to Under-18s we are giving a new age group the opportunity to test themselves in a competitive environment,” he commented.
“I know from my work this year at Tresham College that there is the appetite for competitive rugby at this age group at this time of year, especially because the college and schools 15-a-side season has wound down.
“The success of the Elite Insurance Schools Sevens gives us a framework to build on, and I’m sure that this will be the first of many competitions at Under-18.”

The Elite Insurance Sevens Series is the latest in the wide range of age group tournaments organised by Northampton Saints. Over the course of a season thousands of young rugby players in age groups ranging from Under-7s to Under-16s descend on Franklin’s Gardens on first team match days, with trophies and medals handed out on the main pitch during the half-time interval of that day’s Saints game.
