WASPS 23 SAINTS 27 Paterson: We wanted to win

After a successful first outing in Saints colours, Michael Paterson says that the Saints never had any thoughts of going for the draw late on against Wasps.

Trailing 23-20 heading into the dying moments, a kickable penalty was instead sent to the corner and Tom Kessell would send Tom Collins scampering down the blindside for the win with the afternoon’s final play.

“We wanted to win,” Paterson told SaintsTV. “We play to be successful every time we take the pitch and we decided not to take the three points on offer. Luckily going to the corner paid off this time.

“We want to test ourselves and Wasps were no easy beats today. They’re getting stronger and stronger and at their new ground they’ve done well in the past. It might have been a pre-season game, but we really had to front up, especially in the pack.”

The second row forward was also pleased to get some minutes under his belt for the Saints during a breathless final quarter of action.

“It was really pleasing. It was obviously good to get out there getting the legs ticking over and opening up the lungs a wee bit, though I was definitely sucking in the big air when we were stuck on our own line!”
