Albert Orton
Albert Edward Orton was one of the founding figures of Northampton Saints and played a vital role in the Club’s development both on and off the field.
Born in Dallington in 1864, Orton joined Reverend Wigg’s original ‘Improvement Class’ at the age of 14. That organisation, based at St James Church, would ultimately evolve into Northampton Saints. Few individuals can claim a closer connection to the Club’s origins.
Although his complete playing record has been lost, Orton became a key member of the early Saints side, featuring both as a forward and in the three-quarter line. He captained Northampton during the 1889/90, 1891/92 and 1892/93 seasons and established a reputation as a regular scorer and influential leader.
His greatest impact arguably came after his playing career ended in 1896. Orton served as Club Secretary and Match Secretary until 1922 and was responsible for arranging every Saints fixture between 1886 and 1922. For more than three decades he played a central role in shaping the Club’s growth, organisation and reputation.
His influence extended beyond Northampton. Orton was one of the founding members of the East Midlands Rugby Union and served on its committee, helping to develop rugby throughout the region.
In recognition of his service, he was awarded life membership of the Club in 1905. When offered a testimonial, he declined, stating that the Club’s success was ‘ample reward’.
Orton died in Stony Stratford on 15 February 1924, aged 60. Few individuals contributed more to the foundations of Northampton Saints, and his Hall of Fame induction in 2022 was fitting recognition for a true founding father of the Club.
Hall of Fame profiles have been researched and compiled, with the Club’s grateful thanks, by the volunteers of Northampton Saints Foundation’s Heritage Department – whose work helps preserve and share the rich history of Northampton Saints.
