Keith Barwell

Keith Barwell became the first non-player inducted into Northampton Saints’ Hall of Fame, recognition of a contribution that fundamentally transformed the Club’s future.

A lifelong supporter, Barwell first became closely involved with Saints as a box holder at Franklin’s Gardens. His commitment deepened throughout the early years of professionalism, and in 1995 he made a £1 million investment that proved pivotal to the Club’s development.

At a time when rugby union was adjusting to professionalism, Barwell provided the financial backing and long-term vision that enabled Northampton to compete with the leading clubs in Europe. His support helped underpin the Heineken Cup triumph of 2000 and the domestic and European successes that followed.

Just as important was his insistence on sustainability. Under his stewardship the lcub established a reputation for financial discipline and recorded profits in successive years while continuing to invest in facilities, infrastructure and playing talent.

Through his company, Firm Security, Barwell also became one of the Saints’ most visible commercial supporters, demonstrating a level of personal commitment rarely seen in professional sport.

His legacy can still be seen throughout Franklin’s Gardens, from the Barwell Stand to the bronze statue outside the Club’s reception. It also endures in the continued involvement of the Barwell family, with his daughter, Ella Bevan, currently serving as Chairman of Northampton Saints.

Few individuals have done more to shape the Club. Northampton Saints as supporters know it today would look very different without Keith Barwell’s vision, leadership and investment.

Hall of Fame profiles have been researched and compiled, with the Club’s grateful thanks, by the volunteers of Northampton Saints Foundation’s Heritage Department – whose work helps preserve and share the rich history of Northampton Saints.
