Geoff Allen

Few people have served Northampton Saints in as many capacities as Geoff Allen. Player, administrator, Chairman, Chief Executive and ambassador, he devoted much of his life to the Club.

Raised in Northampton and educated at Kislingbury Primary School and Northampton Grammar School, Allen’s passion for rugby developed at an early age. Recalling his school years, he joked that after passing the eleven-plus examination the only thing that mattered to him was that he would now be able to play rugby.

Allen joined Saints as a teenager and made his first-team debut against Moseley in 1963. The Club’s annual report had already identified him as a promising young player capable of serving Northampton well in the future. Over the next decade he made 136 appearances, primarily at centre, scoring 27 tries.

His playing career was unfortunately curtailed by a serious knee injury. By the age of 29 he had undergone two operations and was forced to retire earlier than expected.

Retirement, however, marked the beginning of an extraordinary second chapter. Over the following 37 years Allen became one of the most important figures in the Club’s administration. He served as Team Secretary, Club Secretary, President, Chairman and Chief Executive, helping guide Saints through some of the most significant periods in their modern history.

For generations of supporters he also became the Club’s voice, serving as matchday PA announcer until 2019. His presence at Franklin’s Gardens became as familiar as many of the players who took the field.

Allen’s induction into the Hall of Fame in 2018 recognised decades of dedication and service that stretched far beyond his playing days and left a lasting mark on Northampton Saints.

Hall of Fame profiles have been researched and compiled, with the Club’s grateful thanks, by the volunteers of Northampton Saints Foundation’s Heritage Department – whose work helps preserve and share the rich history of Northampton Saints.
