Hanrahan impressed by Saints youngsters

While JJ Hanrahan has quickly established himself as a match day regular, the fly half wasn’t shy in heaping praise on the pool of Academy talent snapping at his heels since his arrival at the Saints.

The Kerryman, still just 23 himself, has been at the Gardens in each of the past two weeks to watch the Wanderers in action and says that both Sam Olver and Harry Mallinder are also pressing their claims in training.

“It was a tough game on Monday night against Gloucester, but the week before the two of them were unbelievable,” he said. “Against Newcastle Sammy kicked his goals and ran the game well, while Harry, as you saw, has got a massive boot on him and looked dangerous from full back.

“The two of them are training really well too and keeping the pressure on. You always want to look ahead of you and see what you need to do, but at the same time you have to keep an eye over your shoulder, because these boys are coming up fast!”

In this week’s podcast, Hanrahan also looks ahead to the Aviva Premiership trip to Bath and the Rec, a game that will be his first against the West Country outfit.

“It’s going to be a tough one. They’re coming off a loss to Leicester last weekend and they are going to be hurting from that. If we’re not on our game, it could be a dangerous one for us.

“They’ve got a hugely powerful pack and an electric backline with a lot of pace, but we feel we’ve prepared well and we’re ready to go out there and give it a good crack.”
