Starting off 2017 with a win on the road at Kingsholm yesterday, as they were hosted by Gloucester in the twelveth round of the Aviva Premiership, Saints move back into the top six, now just four points behind fifth place Leicester.
Leading his side out at Kingsholm while making his 300th appearance in a Saints shirt, Stephen Myler said that it meant a lot to the player to have got the win away from home.
“It was a bit of a scrappy game,” Myler told SaintsTV after the game yesterday.
“Obviously the conditions played into that so we’re really proud to have turned things around in the second half.
“The conditions probably favoured us a little bit but I’m really proud of the lads to have come away with the win.
“It’s always a tough game against Gloucester and particularly in conditions like that so it means a lot that we could get another win and add to what we did last week and that moves us slightly higher up the table.”
Coming back from being 9-0 down at the half time break, Saints managed to just edge their hosts and start the New Year with four points under their belts. Myler said that despite the defecit at the break, the side knew they were still in the game and had plenty left to give in the final forty minutes.
“There was no panic,” Myler commented.
“We knew that there was a bit of wind helping them in the first half that was going to be in our favour in the second and that the slope and the conditions were going to help us slightly in the second half so we needed to capitalise on that.
“I thought we did that very well with our kicking game to put them under a bit of pressure. We found it hard to get out of that bottom corner particularly on the right hand side in the first half so we knew that if we could put them under pressure down there then it would be a bit of a struggle for them to get out too.
“The territory paid off and thankfully at the end we were in a position where we may have scored and fortunately we got the penalty try which paid dividends and won us the game.”
Tallying up 300 appearances in black, green and gold was a just step along the way to representing his club, Myler said, a total only he wishes to add to in the future.
“It’s strange that number. It doesn’t seem that I’ve played that many but obviously I’m really proud to be at that number and I just hope that there’s many more to come.
“It’s a privilege to be involved with such a fantastic club and representing the club for as long as I have.
“Hopefully I can keep contributing and be a part of this team which is obviously close to my heart.”
